Scott Stulen
Scott Stulen grew up in west central Minnesota in the 1980’s and has an inappropriately positive view of late seventies design. He (non-ironically) loves Neil Diamond, chainsaw art, pastel polyester baseball jerseys, romantic landscape painters and western shirts from Fleet Farm. His paintings and sculptures explores false constructions of personal and collective memory, failure, loss, and obsession through the cabin culture aesthetic of the Upper Midwest.
He is an active member of the Minnesota art community working as Project Director for mnartists.org at the Walker Art Center, Director of the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers, an independent curator, musician and writer. He received his BFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1998 and his MFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Art History from the University of Minnesota in 2004. He is the recipient of numerous awards including 2005 and 2009 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants, 2008 Meet the Composer’s Creative Connections Grant and an upcoming residency at the Frans Masereel Centre in Kasterlee, Belguim.
Scott exhibits throughout the country including recent solo exhibitions Kool Aid Drunk at ebersmoore gallery, Chicago, IL; Why are you making me sad at the 9th Street Gallery, St. Paul, MN; and Lead Guitar, No Vocals at St. Cloud State University. Scott also regularly performs as a DJ and sings karaoke when provoked. http://www.scottstulen.com.
